Rye Miles #13621 Posted November 8, 2023 Author Posted November 8, 2023 Wild West chronicles on INSP channel had a story about Heck Thomas and Bill Tilghman tracking down Bill Doolin. That’s where I heard that Doolin’s gang was called the Wild Bunch first!
Alpo Posted November 8, 2023 Posted November 8, 2023 Just because Dolan's gang was called the Wild Bunch first doesn't mean that Cassidy's gang copied the name. Back when I was a kid there was a black boxer. Sugar Ray Robinson. Maybe 30 years later there was another black boxer. Sugar Ray Leonard. While it is possible that Leonard decided to call himself Sugar Ray, it seems much more likely that sports writers started calling him Sugar Ray. And it would not surprise me at all if the reason Cassidy's gang was called The Wild Bunch was because some newspaper reporter started calling it The Wild Bunch.

In re: Boxing, tagged as The Sweet Science back in the 1800s and the two boxers referenced were high order practitioners.

Personally I think they did copy the name since Doolin’s Wild Bunch was so well known before Butch and Sundance. They had to have known about the gang but it could have been a writer so I guess we’ll never know for sure.
