Today in History

Early this morning, 185 years ago, before the sun came up, an old Spanish mission, and it's adjacent buildings, that had become a fort, was finally taken by force.

We call this old mission, the Alamo.

A lot of things have been said about this event...some good, some critical. Many books have been written, and several movies, and t.v. programs, have been produced to remember the battle.

No matter what is said, pro, or con, we can say that the defenders stayed, and fought, and died. Early on, they had the opportunity to leave, as was Houston's early orders to do that very thing. But, no matter what anyone thinks, or says. No matter if one thinks it was foolish, or brave...for whatever reason, or excuse, they stayed.

That they stayed, should be, in and of itself, a decision to make us notice, and to make us wonder at the event...and certainly remember it.

Tiny actions, and events, in history, sometimes have very profound effects, in the long run.

February 23rd to March 6th - 1836.
