Dee Mak Jack, SASS #55905
I want to replace the barrel on my Blackhawk. Any and all suggestions that would help will be appreciated. Do the sights normally index for proper alignment ? Thanks in advance.
Warden Callaway
Swapping barrels is generally a task for experienced gunsmiths with proper tools. That said, I've swapped several revolver barrels and rifle barrels with basic heavy machine vise and other tools around the farm. I've never swapped a barrel on a Ruger handgun. In any case, the barrel being installed probably won't align without making adjustments to the shoulder. Normally a barrel will turn in with little resistance to a few degrees of being tight - then torque on in. Some guns have tapered threads and increase in tightness as they are screwed in. Colorado Coffinmaker
The Warden is correct. First stumbling block is a Frame wrench. The possibility of twisting the frame when removing or installing is very real without a proper frame wrench. Very Seldom does the replacement barrel index exactly right. Often a lathe is needed to set the shoulder back a few thou and then barrel to cylinder gap has to be re-established. A simple job, right up until it isn't. A job best left to someone skilled in the process. First question to ask is if they have a Single Action Frame Wrench. If the answer is no, walk away.
