Subdeacon Joe
In amongst all the usual equipment on @HMSPuncher ’s bridge is this beauty. It’s a precise, real time, sea state measuring device. The further back the drinker has dared to peel the cling film on their “hot wet” (cup of tea or coffee) the flatter the sea is
Pat Riot
In my time glass or ceramic dishes were not permitted to leave the Wardroom. There were no glass or ceramic dishes on the Mess Decks. The only person permitted to have anything to drink on the Bridge was the Captain. All others were considered "On Watch" so they could only drink water from a scuttlebutt just outside the bridge in the passageway. We had inclinometers on board so one could see the roll and pitch of the ship but most folks didn't get too concerned unless we had to walk on the bulkheads to get anywhere. That was when we knew we were in heavy seas without looking outside.
Sgt. C.J. Sabre, SASS #46770
Reminds me of the story of the old man and the rope. He used to sit in front of the general store holding a piece of rope. Often people would stop and ask why he had the piece of rope in his hand. "It's a weather gauge." the old man would reply. "How does it work?" "If it's standing out strait, the wind's blowing. If it's wet, it's raining."
