Another school shooting!

A “Candlelight Vigil” was held at the school last night.

But it turned out to be a gun control rally organized by the Brady Campaign and featuring 2 anti gun politicians, Michael Bennett and Jason Crowe. When the hundreds of students in attendance realized what was going on they were outraged and stormed out. They held their own vigil outside and grieved for the death of their fellow student killed in the attack.

Then they went back in to the room and took over the microphone. They then voiced what, in their opinion, is the real root problem.

“Mental Health! Mental Health”, they chanted.

What’s that quote? Oh yeah. “And a child shall lead them”

I don’t know any of those kids but I awfully proud of them.

Most of us here can agree that there are people who should not be allowed to possess firearms.  Where we cannot come to a consensus is on how to identify them or, having identified them, what to do with the information.

Does someone have to be a raving lunatic before their Constitutional rights can be restricted?  If not, what is the boundary line?  Who is to make the judgment?  Who can appeal the judgment, and on what grounds?

Should parents of such a child be prohibited from owning guns at all,  or perhaps mandated to store them offsite or in a virtually impregnable safe?  Should the child's identity be disclosed to school or public officials?  Having disclosed their identity, under what kind of surveillance, if any, should they be placed?  Should they be entered into some kind of database available to authorities and/or firearm dealers?

The questions are endless, and even here in this group the arguments can go on and on.

It seems to me that the central problem is that laws cannot keep crimes from being committed, they can only punish the criminal. Defensive systems, no matter how good, will eventually fail and the best we can do is to try to limit the damage.  This means that we're just going to have to accept that school and other shootings are going to happen, and are a part of our way of life.

The firearms were obtained by the shooters by breaking into a gun safe of the parents of one of them using an axe and crowbar.  They then tried to set fire to the house. Good thing the parents weren’t home. I think we can agree that bringing charges on them would not be appropriate.

A sheet metal cabinet is not a gun safe. It's an ammo storage locker at best. Adam Lanza's mom used a similarly flimsy setup, and when he murdered her he broke into the so-called safe and took the AR-15 he used to shoot up Sandy Hook Elementary.

Any safe can be hacked, it's just a matter of determination and opportunity.  The right kind of drill and parents absent at 8-hour jobs should be enough.

I have no idea what type of safe or cabinet they had. As Beady said, almost any safe can be defeated. We can hardly require every gun owner to buy a Fort Knox safe. Maybe California will do that.
