H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619
Not too long ago I mentioned how I was wanting to obtain a .44-40 cylinder to drop into my 3rd Generation Colt Buntline that was chambered for .44 Special. Before I ordered anything, I took the .44 Special and .44-40 cylinders from my 3rd Gen Sheriff's model and they both fit and worked just fine. That made me feel good about getting another cylinder for the Buntline. I asked if anyone knew where I might obtain one after contacting Colt and being told they don't have any of those anymore. Someone mentioned that he'd seen a couple on E-Bay. So, I looked. Found one that was said to be of Colt manufacture, 3rd Generation, and total cost shipped was $180.00. Far less than some of the other suggestions, so I ordered it. When it arrived, the return address label indicated that it came from Old West Scrounger as did the receipt which also asserts that it is of Colt manufacture. Oddly, the E-Bay listing didn't mention OWS, but that's not important. Anyway, the cylinder, which is unfluted, and nickeled like my gun, dropped right into the gun, cocking the hammer made the thing rotate and the timing seemed to be correct. BUT, the hole for the cylinder pin is too small. The pin simply won't fit. It goes in about 1/4 inch, very tightly, and then stops. I was not gonna force it. In a word, "Ugh." I guess I'll take it to a gunsmith to see if he can ream it out or something. I just thought I'd update the Wire since folks here were so helpful in assisting me in obtaining one. Still, I think this does add some fuel to the fire that Colt doesn't make the SAA anymore. Oh well.
Warden Callaway
At one time cylinder pins were available in several diameters. But better too tight than too loose. If your new cylinder has a removable bushing, it can easily be lapped out.
Tex Jones, SASS 2263
Is the cylinder bushing a press fit? It can be removed and a removable bushing can be used. BTW, are you sure it's a 3rd Generation cylinder?
H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619
Definitely a 3rd gen cylinder. The teeth are identical to all my other 3rd gens, and the bushing does not come out.
Warden Callaway
As you have other 3 generation Colts, maybe swap base pins and see if you can come up with a combination that will work? I've polished both pins and bushings on many of my six shooters. My latest second generation Colt SAA in 45Colt base pin was extremely tight. I polished it a little twice. It's still tighter than what I'd like.
