Pulp, SASS#28319
Local gun store has a decent, but far from pristine, S&W #3 DA in .44-40 for $500.00. Action is very tight, but looks like someone removed surface rust and re-blued it, so I know that kills collector value. The barrel has some very minor pitting, but otherwise nice. Rifling is sharp. It is stamped Belgium on the left side. I didn't know they were made in Belgium. A 53 or 59 is stamped on the right side, the tag says that's a serial number, but I'm not sure about that. The tag also lists 1893 as date of manufacture. Anyway, does that sound like a fair price? I'd kinda like to get it, but just flat out don't know enough about them to make any kind of intelligent decision.
Alpo
It's stamped BELGIUM because it is not a Smith and Wesson. It's a Belgium copy. And in my opinion that 500 is at least 450 more than it's worth.
Buffalo Douglas
This would be information on an actual S&W to compare to. $500 would be a fair price for a rough S&W. Like Alpo said, it's not worth that. Information from the blue book of gun values. If it wasn't refinished, absolute top dollar for me would be $100. .44-40 WCF cal., 4, 5, 6, or 6 1/2 in. barrel, only 15,340 mfg. in separate ser. range 1-15340. Mfg. 1886-1913. Add 100% for factory target sights. Pulp, SASS#28319
Like I said, I don't know anything about them. Ignorance is not a crime, but it sure can cost you a lot of money. Thanks for the input.
Buffalo Douglas
No problem at all Pulp. For future reference, I have a subscription to the blue book. If you're ever looking at a used/new gun and want to know if the price is right send me a PM and I'll take a look. It's either that or you can get to be friends with the guys/gals at the gun shop and they might actually tell you what they have into it and what their margin is (I've got that relationship with my preferred dealer). P.S. that blue book offer is open to anyone. I'm happy to help.
Trailrider #896
This could be a rip-off copy or possibly a licensed copy. Belgium copied a lot of guns, with or without license.
