I would like to see the same graph in per capita numbers.

Wonder if it would look much different?

Probably would flatten out some, would be my guess.

 

Also I assume the numbers on the left of the graph are in 1000's?

 

It is a very interesting graph.

For 2011, the 'top ten' in terms of murder per 100K population for cities with a population > 100K had rates of

57.6 New Orleans

50.8 Flint, MI

48.2 Detroit, MI

35.26 St Louis, MO

33.81 Newark, NJ

31.27 Baltimore, MD

29.86 Jackson, MS

27.63 Baton Rouge, LA

26.31 Oakland, CA

26.15 New Haven, CT

 

The top ten cities sorted by absolute number of murders in 2011 were

515 NY (6.27)

431 Chicago (15.94)

344 Detroit (48.23)

324 Philly (21.16)

297 LA (7.74)

200 New Orleans (57.64)

198 Houston (9.24)

196 Baltimore (31.27)

133 Dallas (10.87)

117 Memphis (17.92)

These 10 accounted for 25.6% of the murders and 11% of the US population.
