Cypress Sam, SASS #10915
Deadeye Dallas gave me a lot of advice when I was trying to get my Taurus to work. He has become The Man to work on Lightnings especially the Taurus. KK, I'm sure that rebarreling to a tapered case cartridge works to eliminate blow-by. A less expensive way is to use 250 grain bullets with a moderate powder charge and a heavy crimp. At least that worked with my Taurus. I know that a Lightning can be competitive. I shoot regularly with several people who can smoke with them. Probably the most impressive is a young lady named Pistol Packin' Peanut who has been getting progressively better over the years. (She's about 16 or so now.) She can run with the best of them.
Buffalo Dick, SASS #12880
Since the OP seems to ask for personal opinion, I'll give mine. None of my western heroes used them and I never saw a Jimmy Stewart movie titled "Colt Lightning." They just don't fit my notion of cowboy but YMMV. Go West
My wife has had one since the first SASS convention. She bought one of the demo guns, an AWA special edition in .38. She would never consider another gun and loves to let it rip on a stage. It's on the second set of cartridge guides and lifter and the pivot hole on the bottom of the bolt has been rewelded & drilled so you can see it's been used alot.
