Trigger Mike Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 I am having a hard time finding a youth model 22 and on the classifieds it was suggested to one to get a Winchester 1906 pump 22. My father has a pump from when he was a kid he bought with is own money. I do not know what kind it is, but if we used that it would save time and money. what brands and features reqired for 22s for a buckaroo?
Buffalo Dick, SASS #12880 Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Basically, any .22 pump with an external hammer should be okay. I have a couple of the Rossi clones of the 1890/1906 Winchester that are nice. These are now sold as Taurus.
Hal A. Looyah #83098 Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 I've started a couple of kids on a Henry. Even the youth was too long, so I'd say get any Henry, not a Goldenboy, and cut it down to fit. Finding a used youth model will be tough. I had to get a new one. I personally didn't start them on a pump because I knew they would have to make the switch to a lever gun at some point anyway. That was my logic. It has served us well. If you shoot in Griffin, I'd be glad to let you shoot our stuff if you want to posse together. 404-384-1597

I planned on going to Griffin last Sat but was up most of the night with a 2 year old. What age do you need to be to shoot at Griffin? At Cherokee you need to be 8 and she is not 8 until later this year.
Ethan Cord Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Mike, Winchester made the 1890, 1906 and 62 models in a pump that would be legal. Marlin made a model 20-A and some others have exposed hammer 22s as well. The 1906 models I have seen usually were built as "boys rifles" with a shorter stock and barrel which makes it easier for young folks to shoot. Once they outgrow it, it still has it's value as you do not have to lop off the barrels or stocks to fit the shooter. I hope this info helps. If you do a google search just click on images then type the brand and model into the search box for an idea of what they look like. Some of the .22 lever rifles are real heavy for smaller kids. Have to........... If a person is crazy and masochistic enough; they don't ever have to switch to them lever thingies!
