Memorial Day story

Recommended Posts

My father was a pilot with the 384th Bomb Group (heavy), 546 Squadron, in World War II. The 384th BG Association is sending a wing panel from a B-17 around the country so that surviving veterans of the group can sign it.

I was privileged to receive the wing this past Monday and facilitate the signing by one more veteran, Don Thompson. I hope you enjoy the pix:

Doesn't seem to be many signatories from what I see there. So many are gone already. My neighbor growing up was 8th Air Force, bombers, ground crew, IIRC. Wish I could've gotten him to talk about his experience with me. The heavies took a real beating early on. Very high casualty rates :FlagAm:

BLESS 'EM ALL

Words and Music by Irving Berlin

Bless 'em all, bless 'em all

The long and the short and the tall

Bless all the sergeants and W.O. Ones

Bless all the corp'rals and their blinking sons

For we're saying good-bye to them all

As back to their billets they crawl

You'll get no promotion this side of the ocean

So cheer up my lads Bless 'em all,

Sorry but I just could not resist.

Darn! This is scary ~ I know the words and the melody! Also it is one of the mood-setting songs on the movie "12 O'clock High," with Gregory Peck.

Thanks,

eGG
