LOW fly-by passes

Recommended Posts

A few years back got to experience an up close and personal flyby of the Reno Racer Dreadnanught, a Hawker SeaFury. It occured at our rc flying field south of Sacramento. Later, the pilot returned to the field to talk to us. He said he was doing 425mph indicated as he passed us at an estimated 50'up and perhaps 150 yards out in a 40degree or so bank towards us so we could see into the cockpit. We FELT the power of that 27 cylinder engine when it went thundering by, AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this isn't that pass, but it is an awesome pass by the racer Dreadnaught!

Back to Ivory Jack's post about the Rolls Royce Merlin engine in the P51 Mustang, The engines used in the D model were mostly if not all Packard V-1650 engines built under license of course but the Merlin design.

Nothing sounds like a Merlin!

Did you know that the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane, de Havilland Mosquito, Handley Page Halifax and the Avro Lancaster used the Merlin as well?

Most Merlins made went into the Lancaster.

Love "The Buick" as she's affectionately known at the Unlimited Air Races at Reno every year. Matt Jackson usually pilots her and there's always something special seeing her fire up that monster engine in the cool morning air
