Cascade Charlie, SASS # 48668L
Well...fist off, let me tell ya that a drinking man can go broke real fast in Ireland. That stuff is expensive! We (Tenshot Tammy and I) started of by driving over to Cork (in the middle of Ireland's worst winter in 40 years) and took a tour of the old Jameson Distillery. What a hoot. It was like Niverna and finding the Holy Grail all at the same time. We finished the tour with a free tasting and compared the triple distilation of Jameson against a single distilled American whiskey (Jack Daniels) and a twice distilled Scots Whiskey (Johnnie Walker Black). The tripple distilation makes an obvious difference in the end product. Very smooth. I decided to purchase a bottle of 12 year old Reserve that is only available at the Jameson Showroom and nowhere else. It was wonderful. Later that week I tried Tullamore Dew and was very plesantly suprised. I thought it was even better than the Jameson. Next I had a long awaited taste of Tyrconnell. I was disappointed. I had such high hopes for this one. It wasn't nearly as smooth as the others and I couldn't find anywhere on the lable that it was triple distilled. I don't know why I had such high hopes for this one but it was a let down. Unfortunately, the class six store here on base only carries Jameson Whiskey and no others. I might have to check downtown and see what the Germans have to offer in the way of Irish Whiskeys. As for Irish stout? I slightly prefer Murphy's over Guinness but I'd never turn either one down. Merry Christmas. Cascade Charlie
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172
I hope you and Tenshot Tammy had a very Merry Christmas. I think that SASS headquarters should give you some kind of award for such a great Irish Whiskey review. I almost wanted to run out and have a drink this morning. Sorta like hair of the dog, if you get my drift. Maybe an appointment as official Booze tester for SASS, outside of the US. Give you some kind of a badge to go with that title. Maybe even a stipend to go with it, naaaa that ain't gonna happen. I just told my wife that I would have to make another trip to the liquor store this week to pick up a bottle or three to make the comparisons. Now you see what you have done. I am certain that the Germans will have some really good Irish whiskey. Maybe some Schnapps to go with it. Take care and God bless.
J-BAR #18287
There must be a bottle of Powers Gold around somewhere; try to get it into your evaluations, too. Thanks for all your efforts on our behalf. On so many fronts....
Cascade Charlie, SASS # 48668L
The Jameson showroom had a supply of the Powers Gold for sale along with their other offerings. No mention was made of the Powers brand during our tour so I figured it was a poor relation that they don't mention in polite comapny. You're right though...I'll have to find a bottle and compare it as well...My work is never done...oh woe is me. BM...I like the way you think. Maybe you could champion my cause to SASS HQ and see how hard they laugh.
Dusty Balz, SASS#46599
CC, head north to a town called "Cong", (Northeast of Galway about 40 km). They filmed The Quiet Man there, the cast stayed at Ashford Castle. If you can stay there for a night a two, one of my favorote places on earth (built in 1228) http://ashford.ie/index.php Hey of was good enough for The Duke... Slainte! Cascade Charlie, SASS # 48668L
Dusty, That was on my trip list of things to see and do. Unfortunately, the Irish don't have a clue how to drive in snowy weather so our trips were cut short most of the time. We were down in Killarney and the trip would have been a little long. We plan to try again in the spring and go into Dublin the next time so we can get around to most of the stuff in northern Ireland. The Ashford looks like a pretty neat place. Cascade Charlie, SASS # 48668L
Update on the search for Powers Gold... I tried two German stores today with no luck.Although I did stumble across some Bushmills that I didn't try in Ireland. I'm also happy to report that the Germans are less proud of their Irish Whiskey than the Irish. A 700ml bottle of Tullemore Dew is only 14 Euro here compared to 26 Euro in Ireland. The 12 Year Old Jameson750ml was 42 Euro in Ireland and the Tyrconnell 750ml was 36 Euro. Tomorrow I'll try a store in Homburg that has a pretty nice liquor and wine section and then we'll pop over the boarder and try a real nice store in France also. I'll keep y'all posted. I'm on a quest now!
Noz
Note on the Powers. I had decided that Tullamore Dew was going to be my drink. J-Bar had introduced me to Powers but it is rather hard to find. I got to the candy store that carries it and purchased a bottle. My first thought was that it didn't have the depth of flavor that the Dew has. I wasn't going to pour it out so I continued, a glass of this and a glass of that until I realized that I was reaching for the Powers more than for the Dew. Our little town has only a convienence store. I asked the owner if he could get Powers. It took him two weeks to locate a source but now I have a ready supply. It is inexpensive as far as Irish goes and has a very clean bright taste. Try some.

Guest Hoss Carpenter, SASS Life 7843
I got a 1.75 L of Jameson for Christmas; maybe not the best, but gooder than grits! Hoss
Noz
Jameson will also work! The only Irish I have tried that I really don't like is Bushmill. It tastes too much like Scotch. Now, I like Scotch but that smoke taste is not what I'm looking for in an Irish.
Cascade Charlie, SASS # 48668L
I thought I'd found the holy grail! http://picasaweb.google.com/brad.cascadech...392923576369506
Buckshot Frank
I'm a big fan of Bushmills Black (aka Black Bush), but I usually fall back on Jameson due to cost. I haven't tried Tullamore or Powers yet. I'll have to give them a shot (no pun intended).
