Woodchuck Willy 114613 Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 Howdy pards, New SASS shooter here. I have question on the long range side matches and the correct equipment. I'd like to use the rifles I have but I want to make sure they are legal. I'm a bit confused by the SASS rule book. I have Winchester 94AE one in 30-30, and one in .44 Mag. Can the 30-30 be used in the lever long range rifle? If I load it with the Black powder sub APP, does that change the category. Same question for the .44, except would it be the revolver rifle cartridge category? Thanks for any help!
Marauder SASS #13056 Posted September 3, 2024 Posted September 3, 2024 Normally they have a lever action rifle caliber stage. The 30 30 is fine for that. If they have a Black Powder category, it would most likely work there as well. We nearly always have a pistol caliber lever action event so that is where the 44 works great.
Three Foot Johnson Posted September 4, 2024 Posted September 4, 2024 As Marauder said, your M94 .30-30 is legal for Long Range rifle caliber lever action side matches - I've never seen this side match divided into black and smokeless, so either powder will work. Your '94 .44 mag is suitable for Long Range pistol caliber lever action side matches and also as a main match rifle. Once again, I've never seen the pistol cal lever action side match divided into black and smokeless. While there are black powder categories, of course, I've never heard of a smokeless category, meaning there is no category that specifies you must use smokeless powder. Black is good in all categories. In my limited experience with them, the Model 94 isn't a good choice for a main match rifle because the long action isn't made to feed the shorter .357, .44 mag, .44-40, and .45 Colt cartridges.
Mack Hacker, #60477 Posted September 4, 2024 Posted September 4, 2024 New shooters should be informed that if they intend to shoot only local monthly matches, they could go years without seeing a side match. Some clubs have them regularly, some sporadically, and some not at all. Visit the clubs you will be shooting and ask questions before you invest any money on firearms for SASS. This frequently given advice applies in triplicate to side match guns
