Sawed-Off
One of my .45LC Taylor's Smoke Wagons is over-indexing. I've had the pair for over 10 years and they've been fine. They were both originally slicked up by Cody Conagher before being sent to me Down Under. Anyway, if I work the hammer slow it works just fine, but when I run it at match speed the cylinder turns so far as to almost skip a chamber! I've had it apart to check it out and it's clean and nothing is broken. If I had to guess, it could be the bolt is not snapping back up fast enough? Both the bolt and the trigger/bolt spring look fine. I don't have any cowboy gunsmiths in my area. Would you pards have any hint on what part might need some attention? Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933
That is a classic symptom of a broken hand spring. If it is ten years old is the hand spring a leaf spring? If so it is probably broken or bent. If it is a coil spring make sure it did not get pinched between the frame and backstrap or that the plunger is not lost. Take it apart and let us know what is in there.
Abilene, SASS # 27489
Smoke Wagons should all have the coil hand spring. It could also be a weak bolt spring. Try swapping the bolt springs between the two guns and see what happens.
Sawed-Off
Aha! Come to think of it, I lost the plunger for this particular pistol a couple of years back and made my own replacement. I had totally forgotten about that as it had been running fine. I bet it has worn down or something. VTI charge $30 to ship a $5 part so I held off. I'll order a proper replacement and some other spares. Thanks to both of you!
Jefro, SASS#69420
I had a bolt split on one of mine, you could barely see it. Good Luck
English Tom
Take a tooth pick's thickness off the short leg of the (flat type) bolt spring , that will bring the bolt up a fraction earlier and allow the cylinder to lock up faster .......
