A surplus cap and ball pistol and a surplus rifle or carbine- the Starr always looked like a reasonable option.  The reputation for being unreliable goes back to folks in Army Logistics trying to ease the logistics strain by feeding it the wrong ammunition.  Sharps ammo fit- but was too short for reliable ignition.

 

Metallic cartridges weren't nearly as wide spread and available as folks like to think until the 1880's in many parts of the country and pistols like the SAA were military only- unless you bought one from a deserter- until the mid to late 1870's.
