Subdeacon Joe
Haunting Photos of the Abandoned 1984 Winter Olympics Facilities In 1984, Sarajevo hosted the Winter Olympics. Just a decade later, the region was torn apart by a bitter years-long conflict, leading to widespread death and suffering. One not-so-familiar effect of this war was the toll it took on the Olympic infrastructure which had been built not that long ago. Today, these structures stand as a visual reminder of how quickly things can change. While these photos offer a stunning glimpse of the decayed grounds from the 1984 Winter Olympics, it’s important to also remember how devastating the 1990s war was for the region. The Siege of Sarajevo was the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. The sports complex built for the 1984 Winter Olympics was utilized as a graveyard due to high casualties. The story of the 1984 Olympics doesn’t have the happiest ending, but it’s definitely a story worth knowing.
Hacker, SASS #55963
It did not appear that that many Olympic stuff was damaged by war. I suspect that many other once Olympic sites have suffered/endured time similarly if they don't get maintained. It is unlikely that many places that host the winter Olympics would have ski jumping, nor would the luge nor bobsled be a popular non-olympic sports. I cannot imagine a ski area in this country having a bobsled run open to the public. Let alone a ski-jump. Imagine the liability. In some finite way it appears that this decay is due to lack of need after the olympics rather than a war. The bobsled and luge facilities constructed for the 1972 winter olympics in Sapporo Japan were dismantled. It will be interesting to see what becomes of the olympic venues made for the chinese hosted summer games and these just ending winter games in Soochi. Badlands Bob #61228
I would imagine that most countries would use these older Olympic venues as training sites for future Olympic athletes.
Nasty Newt # 7365
The stuff China built for a recent Summer Olympics is falling down as well.
