For those who have never been to Red Rock Canyon.

Red Rock Canyon is SW of Oklahoma City near the town of Hinton, OK. The canyon is basically a sandstone wash, approximately 200 feet below the average elevation of the area. It is about 1.5 miles long and the deepest part of the canyon is probably averages less than 100 yards wide throughout the length. It runs nearly north and south and gets shallower as you go south. The bottom is flat with a small creek running through it. At the time of the story the bottom would most likely be forested with large cottonwoods, hickory and other trees. Currently the bottom is mostly grass. The edges of the bluffs are forested with Eastern Red Cedar and hardwoods, getting smaller as the elevation increases. The west side is the steepest, dropping nearly 200 feet in about 400 feet. The east side drops the 200 feet in about 1200 feet. Both sides of the canyon have near vertical bluffs from 20 to 100 feet high at the bottom with a few exceptions.

APPROACHING THE OUTLAW CABIN:

In the story the cabin is located at the northeast. The easiest approach to the cabin would be from the south end of the canyon, where it peters out. From the north there are three feeder canyons that are not as steep as the west and east sides although probably still to steep for horses. From the east there is one feeder canyon entering the main canyon approx in the middle that would be fairly easy to negotiate. The entire west side too steep for horses. If you approached from the south you'd have to stay close to the west wall, as another feeder canyon forks off to the northeast. It would be easy to accidentally enter the feeder which would take you the wrong way.

Three sentries could guard all the horseback accessable entries to the canyon, one at the south end, one at the east center feeder canyon and one at the conjuction of the three feeder canyons on the north.

I've been there a couple of times back in my school teaching days. If those of you from other states are travelling through OK on I-40 the park and canyon would make an interesting little side trip.

Thanks Pard, we could use some help with the story if you feel creative.

Like they say in the music bizz, just grab a chord and come in sideways.
