Alan Greenspan served under many presidents going back into the LBJ and Nixon eras. His autobiography, which is a fascinating book, had an interesting observation.

He said that Gerald Ford was the most "normal" president he'd ever worked with, because he was the only one who had never sought the office. Mr. Greenspan believed that there was something about men who worked to be president that made them, well, somewhat out of the norm.
