Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted May 1, 2024 Posted May 1, 2024 "In the early 1860s, Kady Brownell met Robert Brownell while working as a weaver. They married, but when the U.S. Civil War began in 1861, Robert joined the Union Army. Kady refused to be apart from him and served alongside him, earning respect from soldiers and permission from commanders. She went from a support role to a color bearer, challenging gender norms. After the war, she became the only woman to receive Union Army discharge papers, receiving a pension and joining the Grand Army of the Republic."
