And this close to a direct quote:  "A Gurkha runs slowly and somewhat awkwardly on flat ground, runs well uphill and no one Earth can catch the Gurkha on a downhill slope."  Credible sources have them running full speed down steep hills, often leaping 10-15 feet at a time, relying on their over developed leg and lower back muscles to handle the jumps during service on the Northwest Frontier, which is now the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
