Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
Maine is not Idaho, but potatoes are a big business. When I was a kid I was told that in Aroostook County (way north Maine) school started in mid August so that kids could have two weeks off in October to help pick potatoes. I don’t know if that’s still true. Farther north than Maine are the Maritime Provinces of Canada. So in the late 90s I read that PEI (Prince Edward Island, a maritime province) attempted to export potatoes to the USA. They were small, it was a short season, they had been picked early, they were not liked, they needed a gimmick. Somebody decided to call them New Potatoes. Subdeacon Joe
Not unlike pig-sicles. They had been a throw away item. Then refrigeration came in and they were a low cost per pound meat. Especially things like rib tips and baby back ribs.
