Cheyenne Ranger, 48747L
Today is March 2, Texas Independence Day. It is also Sam Houston's birthday--how 'bout them apples? In 1836 at Washington-on-the-Brazos, the George Childress--led committee presented the Texas Declaration of Independence to the delegates of the Convention of 1836 who passed it. Sixty men would come to sign the Declaration--59 delegates and the Convention Secretary. Only two signatories were native-born Texans the rest hailed from Mexico, Scotland, England, Ireland and 12 U.S. states. While Houston, himself signed the document there is no proof that Cherokee Jones was one of the signers. Today is a state holiday--have a ball
Marshal Hangtree
Although I have previously read several books on the independence of Texas, the Alamo, etc., a few days ago I started reading the book Sam Houston and the Alamo Avengers written by Brian Kilmeade of Fox News fame. It's the best book on the subject that I have read to date. Happy Birthday, Texas . . . and Sam Houston!
