Alpo
It has long been my understanding that Lugers were numbered 1 through 9999, and then the numbers started over, with 1a through 9999a, then with 1b throught 9999b, etc. Also that each maker ran his own numbers, so there could be an Erfert gun, 4567d, and a DWM gun 4567d, and a Mauser gun 4567d. And, presumably, when each maker finished a run of approximately 270,000 guns (9999z), they started over again with 1a through 9999a. I have just been informed that they started over again every year. That there could be a 1914 DWM 4567d, a 1915 DWM 4567d, a 1916 DWM 4567d, etc. Is this true? That they did not "start over at 1a when they reached 9999z", but instead started over at 1a in January, regardless of what the ending numbers in December were?
