Although his limb was rendered permanently immobile he recovered to lead a normal life until he went into hospital due to increasing pain from his wartime wound.

He underwent surgery to amputate his left leg but died from severe blood loss and became the last casualty of the Great War.

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was wounded leading a charge in the battle for Petersburg in 1864. He was carried from the field believed to be mortality wounded and because of that belief was given a battlefield promotion to General by Grant.

The wound was in fact mortal, he died from that wound in 1914, fifty years later.
