Reloading or retail?

One of the graveyarders coming on shift overheard us and asked if I wanted a "good deal" on a never used shotgun press and all the gear to reload 12 ga shells. I asked what kind of "good deal" and he said "I'll give it to you if you take it". I don't even know what brand it is but apparently it's new in th box, so for free I not care.

If the box is labeled MEC, regardless of the model, he is giving you a very nice gift. (If box is labeled Ponsness Warren, he is your buddy for life, though!).

Good luck, read the manual and get a good shotshell loading manual, too. Shotshell loads have to be assembled exactly to a recipe that is known to work well, because there is little room between a great reloaded shotshell and a gun destroying shotshell.

Good luck, GJ

I've been reloading since 1969 and love it. Brass lasts a long time with the low to moderate loads we use in CAS, so you do save money, especially if you also buy components in bulk. Watch Ebay for good deals on both used and new reloading equipment. And shop around on-line for the best deals in bulk lead bullet prices. If you are lucky enough to belong to a gun club that has barrels of empty shotshells from the skeet and trap fields for free like ours does, then you save even more. Or you can scrounge them after CAS matches. CAS shooters that don't reload shotgun just leave theirs behind in the buckets for that purpose.

If you only shoot once a month or two, buy loads, or buy (err, I mean, contribute to his loading component supply) off a fellow reloader in your local club(s).

If you shoot anything strange that is hard to come by, or you want to practice a lot, or you are gearing up to shoot most weekends, start reloading, or at least save all your fired brass. You will drop from 30 cents a round (plus) down to 10 cents or less.

Shotshell loading might be down the road for you later, too, but mostly folks do it because getting light shotshells can be iffy, not so much to save money.

CAS is a reloading sport, not as heavy as say benchrest, but almost.

Good luck, GJ

What he said! Very good advice GJ!! If you shoot alot you need to reload.
