Harvey Mushman
Hard to pick a favorite, but perhaps my top five would be: Ben Hur Doctor Zhivago The Longest Day Patton Spartacus That is a great list. Gvien the classic concept of "epic" I'd add: Lawrence of Arabia The Ten Commandments Battle of the Bulge Gone With the Wind Midway Borderline Epic: Bridge over the River Kwai From Here to Eternity Midway Edit to add an overlooked KW classic: Bridges at Toko Ri, And a modern VN controversial classic (an Epic attempt): Apocalypse Now
Chili Pepper Kid, SASS #60463
The Alamo expresses a lot of American and Texan attitude even if it is a little corny, It is a John Wayne movie after all. +

Bama Red
I just finished watching John Wayne's 1930 film, "The Big Trail". It was the Blu-Ray version and one of the extras included on the disc was a featurette entitled "Making of The Big Trail". These numbers ought to add some definition to the term "epic". The producers used the following during production of the movie. 20,000 extras 1800 head of cattle 1400 horses 500 head of buffalo 700 head of chickens, sheep and dogs 725 Indians from 5 different tribes 185 Conestoga, Studebaker and prairie schooner wagons 93 principals A production staff of 200 22 cameras The production covered 4300 miles over 7 states Folks, for 1930, this was an unprecedented feat, a true "epic".
