el Gato Gordo - SASS #15162
What Thomas Fleming omits is that the so-called "rich" planters of the south, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, the Carters, et al. were ruinously in debt to their English Factors These Factors were the Agents/Merchants who "handled" the planters' business in England, such as selling the planters' tobacco, cotton and indigo, and buying and shipping the books, wines, gowns, and other manufactured goods. Seldom did a crop cover a year's expenses. Very much like today when a person has not the self discipline to minimize use of credit cards, buying vehicles and toys on credit, and over-extending on a mortgage. The planters of 1776 NEEDED a revolution. Buena suerte, el Gato Gordo (late of the Old Dominion)
