J-BAR #18287 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 For you slang experts, when did villains in the movies ( or elsewhere ) start to be called "heavies"? Was Sidney Greenstreet in "The Maltese Falcon" the first "heavy", or did some other big bad guy define the term?
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Ask.com says that heavy gained the sanse of villain in the theatrical sense in 1880. It does not back up that staement with any data however. Perhaps the O.E.D. might give more info.
