To give a dull non-reflective appearance, helmets were painted with matte khaki paint finished with sand, sawdust or crushed cork. Rarely were individual helmets painted as souvenirs to reflect the wearer's rank or unit. One of the most elaborate exceptions however is the helmet belonging to Corporal Ernest Corey. Corey’s helmet serves as a reminder of his service with 55 Battalion and a record of the battles in which he was awarded an unprecedented four Military Medals.
