I have a couple of questions about High School athletic teams

First one - how do they pick the captain? Does the team vote? Does the coach say, YOU'RE CAPTAIN? Does the position you play make the difference - "You're right guard and the right guard is always Captain".

 

And number two - if you are first string varsity in your junior year, are you automatically first string varsity in your senior year, or do you have to try out like all the newbies? It would make sense that you would - there might be somebody a whole lot better than you that's a sophomore. But do you?

I was team captain in high school. Coach picks. In some sports, position matters. Football quarterback comes to mind. And yes, unless you're coach's favorite, every spot is open during tryouts week.
