open range rain storm question

everytime I see them get ready for the pending rain storm it puzzles me they did not pitch their shelter by and attach it to the wagon. Seems the wagon could have given extra places to stay dry and their shelter might have prevented the wagon from sinking on the mud due to less mud under the wagon. Am I wrong? Could they then also tied the horses on the other side of the wagon where the hrses where at least closer to them to keep an eye on? Maybe tied the string holding the horses to the wagon instead of a stake in the ground?

If the horses spook (especially the drafts) they could pull the wagon over or seriously hurt themselves trying to break lose. Best to let them have some slack to break away if they get scared. Usually will not stray too far from other horses or food. Been out in the high country and lost some in the night, come morning they were within a mile of camp

Also even back then they knew to stay away from the highest points in open range during a storm. Especially with a lot of metal around. So, then pitching a tent to the wagon they could get a shocking experience.
