el Gato Gordo - SASS #15162
Sadly, in any army, there are a few officers the enemy would be glad to give a medal because their incompetence was immeasurably helpful! I'm certain the Army of Northern Virginia had it's share. eGG (late of the Old Dominion)

There were four former Confederate generals who served as Union generals in the Spanish American War. One of them would really surprise you Fightin' Joe Wheeler is probably the best known. The others were Matthew Butler, Fitzhugh Lee, and Thomas Rosser. Fightin' Joe also served in the Philipines if I remember correctly. One tough ol' bird. That's a great trivia question, Henry T. Always a good one to win a few root beers.
Captain Woodrow Cahill, SASS # 54363
Fightin' Joe Wheeler is probably the best known. The others were Matthew Butler, Fitzhugh Lee, and Thomas Rosser. Fightin' Joe also served in the Philipines if I remember correctly. Gary Busey portrayed Wheeler in the movie Rough Riders => http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0112752/quotes Made me chuckle when he kept talking about "killing them Spanish Yankees". Pretty fascinating gentleman => http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Wheeler Reportedly he also rode a mule for most of the War. When asked why a mule instead of a big fine steed, he replied "Mules are sure-footed and reliable; horses are all prance and fart and no sense". Yep, I've heard the same quote, or something similar, attributed to Gen. Joseph "Vinegar Joe" Stillwell. Either way, the statement is right on.
