Subdeacon Joe Posted August 25, 2024 Posted August 25, 2024 My wife heard something on the telly that roused her curiosity and so she looked up "The Desk Set," a Tracy/Hepburn film. She sent me the Wikipedia pice on it,. This kind of jumped out at me (and was the relevant part of what she was trying to find): "The computer referred to as EMERAC is a homoiophone metonym for ENIAC ("Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer"), which was developed in the 1940s and was the first electronic general-purpose computer." "Homoiophone metonym" - I'd never seen nor heard that phrase before, but, thanks to a grounding in English, and where it came from, along with a bit of Trinitarian dogma, I had no problem knowing what it meant. An iota of difference, indeed.
