Subdeacon Joe
Cheatham pours heart into apprentice program for troubled youth “I work hard,” she says fiercely. “I work very hard. And I think if I work hard enough, I can do whatever I want to do. There are obstacles, for sure. Being a woman is an obstacle. Racism is an obstacle, but that shouldn't stop it. It shouldn't even slow you down. “If I want something, I make it happen.” When the house came on the market for $200,000, she sprang into action. “It's the only thing I've ever done where I called friends and said, 'We really need this to happen — and with all this will and all this intention ...'” Cheatham said. And they delivered — from the elderly retiree who came into the cafe tearfully with a $200 check, to a woman who handed over a $10,000 check, and with damp eyes said, “I want the kids to have this.” World needs more like here. And the press needs to let us know about people like her. I think they are far more common than we know.
