"American Odyssey, The Journey of Lewis and Clark"

Ingvard Henry Eide, editor, photographer

introduction by A. B. Guthrie, Jr.

"In a splendid sequence of photographs, with a robust narrative from the journals, the bold overland march of Lewis and Clark to the Pacific, a classic exploration, is vividly portrayed in American Odyssey. Here is the unfolding of a vast, magnificent landscape as the West was revealed to Lewis and Clark and the danger-wise young men of the Expedition. In an authentic retracing of the route explored and described by these courageous men, the reader can actually travel back in time to the early 1800's and accompany the Expedition on its entire journey.

Their mission was discovery. So, too, was that of photographer Ingvard Eide in depicting, in a photographic essay, the essence of the Lewis and Clark odyssey. Eide's devotion to the task is apparent in his specific efforts to travel the entire route at the time of year that coincides with the journal entries...and in making certain that he photographed only what Lewis and Clark themselves would have seen. His extraodinary pictures capture the beauty of the land and evoke the wounderment and solitude sensed by the Expedition: of wilderness never before seen, the overwhelming distances, flowering prairies, limitless mountains, furious rivers - all in untouched, unspoiled grandeur - as a first-seen land.

Here, with over 260 photographs faithful to journal descriptions and time of year, is an exciting daily chronicle of their odyssey. Lewis and Clark and their men tell in their own words of preparations for the journey and of diplomatic maneuverings; discipline, maintained by flogging and gauntlet; of Indians; of dealings with unruly fur traders intent on Canadian exploitation of the newly purchased Louisiana Territory and its riches. They tell of brutal weather, savory dog meat, numbing exaustion, and charging grizzlies, and describe with delightful elouquence the wounders of this "butiful" land.

"Wha a land they saw! What an empire..." writes A.B. Guthrie, Jr., Pulitzer Prize winning author and noted authority on western history, in the introduction to American Odyssey. "it is because so much of it remains, much of it to disappear in less than imagained time, that the photographs of Ingvard Henry Eide become important. It hardly matters that we have not seen their like before: it matters that we may not see their like again."
