Blasted Cap
Hope the other 2 pull thruogh. One police officer dead, 2 wounded after South Dakota shooting By News Core August 03, 2011 RAPID CITY, S.D. -- Tributes were pouring in Wednesday for an officer who was shot dead and two others who were injured during a confrontation with an armed man in Rapid City, S.D. James Ryan McCandless and two other officers were fired upon by an unnamed suspect during what seemed like a routine stop Tuesday afternoon, the Rapid City Journal reported. The officers approached four people acting suspiciously at a city intersection around 4:30pm local time and were shot at. At least one officer returned fire, hitting the suspect. The shooter was taken to a local hospital and underwent surgery late Tuesday, authorities said. His condition was not released. Authorities said the other three people at the scene were not considered suspects. McCandless, 28, is the first Rapid City police officer to be shot dead in the line of duty since 1916, The Journal reported. He died at the scene. A second officer, Nick Armstrong, 27, underwent surgery at a local hospital and remains in critical condition. A third officer, whose name was not released, was shot in the face but was in stable condition late Tuesday. At a news conference, Rapid City police chief Steven Allender said the officers were heroes. "I'd ask you and the rest of the community to honor them," he said. "This was not a bank robbery," he added. "It was not a high-risk endeavor. It was a routine stop in its appearance." Allender said authorities expected to confirm the identity of the suspect, who he described as a Native American male in his 20s, on Wednesday. "It's a tragic situation," Rapid City mayor Sam Kooiker said at the news conference. "Our hearts go out to [the officers'] families. There are a lot of people praying tonight." Kooiker said the incident was "another reminder in a long list of reminders how unpredictable life can be."
