12 Gauge Hull Trimmer

You have a '97 shotgun and factory or standard-length 2 3/4 inch hulls are too long for the ejection port? That would be really weird, and the first time I have ever heard of that.

Most likely you just have an extractor/ejector problem. Has your gun quit ejecting recently, where before it was fine?

Things to check for a novice gun tinkerer:

Not working the action strongly enough. 97s normally need more force on the forearm during ejection than any other pump shotgun. "Run it like you stole it"

The ejector on the left side of the receiver (small hook that mounts on the outside of the receiver and sticks into the inside of the receiver) - could be broken or worn. Easily replaced, but it has to be fitted in most cases so it dos not rub on the bolt.

Dirty extractors - clean them (there are both a left extractor and a right extractor on the bolt).

Weak extractors - starting to get to a problem that a gunsmith needs to look at. There is a coil spring behind the right extractor, and the left extractor is essentially a leaf spring. Both get worn and weak through lots of use.

Tell us why you suspect it is the hulls being too long, rather than an ejector/extractor problem, maybe there's something strange occurring.

Good luck, GJ

Cactus Cartright,

Here is a link to a shotshell trimmer from Ballistic Product. I have one in 12ga. to trim paper shot shells for black powder. The trimmer is great on plastic hulls also. It works well.
