Nice lookin' piece, but, what is that long piecea' brass covering up on the side?? Don't remember seeing anything like that on others. Pending answer, I am interested.

Al,

I was told that this trapdoor was fit (either originally or during its service) with the experimental Metcalfe cartridge block. This was removed and replaced with the brass plate(i do not know when this took place). Attached are photos.

Photo 1 shows the cutout in the stock of a similar rifle for the cartridge block.
