Subdeacon Joe
Idjit With a Gun Del Norte County road crews working to clear a landslide on Requa Road hit an unforeseen delay Thursday, when an impatient motorist brandished a rifle, threatened workers and demanded to be let through. Crews have been working to clear Requa Road since Saturday, when it was completely blocked by a landslide. On Tuesday, crews cleared one lane of the road, allowing emergency personnel access to the road above the slide and also allowing the 80 or so residents who live up the road from the slide to pass through every couple of hours. On Thursday, Eduah Schwenk, 21, who lives up Requa Road, allegedly got a bit impatient. Shortly before 2 p.m., it had been just about two hours since crews let residents through, according to Del Norte County Sheriff's Cmdr. Bill Steven, but crews were having mechanical problems with a piece of equipment and couldn't clear the road to allow residents through. ”(Schwenk) got impatient and got out of his car with his rifle and started yelling and cussing and demanding to come through immediately,” Steven said, adding that the road crews quickly packed up their equipment, left the area and called the police. Steven said sheriff's deputies arrested Schwenk at his Requa Road residence a short time later, taking him into custody without incident and booking him into the Del Norte County jail on suspicion of feloniously brandishing a firearm. Gotta wonder what the heck was going through his brain cell.
