Went to the gunshow here in Hurricane on the 7th and sold a couple of guns "I just had to have" at the time, but didn't shoot much. Anyway, my local Ace Hardware has a great gun department and they only charge 10% over cost to order a gun. So, on Friday I ordered the Henry so I can try my hand at the Plainsman side match at the upcoming Four Corners Regional. Gun should arrive sometime this week. I may post a pic here as "proof of purchase", but then, they all look the same

Howdy, I'm interested in setting up a rifle for shooting in Quigley matches, and maybe The Quigley match out West if I get good enough at it. I have a couple of questions for the folks who know about such things - what rifle & caliber? I'm interested in the Browning 1885 High Wall in 45-70, though I've been outbid on all of them so far (I have a couple of Browning BLRs and am partial to the brand). Is this a good place to start, and is there an advantage to the 30" barrel over the 28" when trying to push it out to 800+ yards? If not, would a Sharps be better, and by what company? I'm planning to buy a 45-70, but is there an advantage in long range shooting to reaming the chamber out to 45-90 through 45-120? I'd appreciate any and all info, links, advice, etc. See some of you at the Ides of March this weekend!

The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook (4th Edition)on pages 218 and 219 specifies recipes should only be used in Ruger #1 and #3 rifles. Any experience out there using these loads in your MODERN 1874 Shiloh Sharps rifles?

1. When using fillers with BP, after being loaded thru a drop tube ( the BP ) do you need to allow for more than the usual 1/16 to 1/18" compression when filler is added. I presume the filler would compress more than the BP below it.? 2. I have heard from a couple folks that corn cob or walnut media should not be used as a filler as it will cause barrel wear. Any truth to this? I was thinking walnut media would likely be less apt to absorb moisture as compared to cereal. EH

I am looking at getting a Pedersoli 1886 Sporting rifle in 45-70. I have been told the same rifle is sold in the states by Uberti. Has anyone bought or used one? What do you think? I have heard mixed messages about the earlier Pedersoli 1886/71

I plan on shooting Plainsman at Bordertown this year and am pretty excited about it. So of course I have a stupid question. I am trying to figure out the most efficient way to carry the 45-70 ammo in addition to my shotgun belt where I have good access for pulling both. Belt slide? Special combo belt? Two belts? What do you experienced Plainsman shooters find works best for you? Also, what is a typical Plainsman rifle round count per stage? Looks like 5-6 is pretty typical... I currently wear a shotgun belt and a cross-draw pistol belt. My first notion was a 45-70 Prairie belt worn in place of the shotgun belt, and then moving the shotgun ammo to a belt slide on the gun belt. But my left revolver butt is perfectly aligned to block my left hand from reaching the shotgun shells on a belt slide, so this is less than optimal. Same problem for a belt carrier with the 45-70 ammo. Thanks!
