Having 2 battle rifles in different calibers becomes a logistics nightmare of unimaginable proportions.
They are already using allot of different hand held weapons. Especially in different units and branches.

Everyone is always looking for one gun to do everything. It’s just not possible, everything is a compromise. Everyone is knocking the new Sig rifle because of round count and weight but if you want a more powerful cartridge it’s the price you pay. At least it’s an improvement over something like a M14 or FAL . About the same weight with 270 Winchester ballistics , an optic and suppressor . And I would certainly expect it to have teething pains, every other gun the military has adopted has .
Personally I would keep the M4 add the Sig then just issue the rifle that best suits the current need
Even with our personal guns everything is a matter of personal preference and compromise. It’s just good that we have so many choices available to us.

I was thinking about your statement above over the past couple of days and I agree with you.
Here’s why:
ITEM 1: The loading process. I wonder how many soldiers and Marines died or were otherwise injured because for a couple of seconds their thumb was stuck between the bolt and receiver. To top it off the damaged thumb or fingers were usually on the dominant hand.
Perhaps that design was written into the spec by the military or maybe it wasn’t, but it was the design that was approved.
They couldn’t have spec’d a magazine fed rifle? What is also funny to me is the upgrade was the M14. I loved the M14 when I was in the Navy, but the M14 and the M1A just aren’t beloved or popular.
If someone designed a modern high powered rifle today with en bloc clips it would be laughed into the history books.
ITEM 2: Weight. The M1 Garand is heavy and cumbersome.
ITEM 3: No easy way to mount a scope. The 30.06 was and is a long range rifle cartridge. Making it an accurate long range cartridge past where the naked eye can see requires a scope. Mounting a scope on a M1 requires machining and precision. Something that could not be done on a battlefield.
FINAL: At the time of WW2 the Garand was indeed a reliable accurate battle rifle, but the concept of the M1’s operation was over engineered and costly. The war was coming. There wasn’t time to develop better alternatives. Also you had an Army design board with truly old tech ideas. Most of those people probably had Dad’s that thought the trap door rifle was high tech.
I own an M1 Garand. I love the idea of that rifle. I have wonderful memories of shooting that rifle, but if I had to “go to war” (as if…) it would not be the rifle that I would choose today.
I think you’re judging it by today’s standards. For its time the garand was innovative. High capacity, extra 3 rounds, it accepts the clip and gets rid of it on its own unlike the competitors stripper clips and it had a great set of iron sights. Nothing was exactly optics ready back then. If I was a GI in WW2 given the choice I would’ve taken one over the bolt guns

If I ever get the urge to get another, I'll try a Bersa Thunder 380 instead.
Here’s a timely review

Most overrated gun?
Walther PPK. I've owned two. I really, really wanted to like them. I don't regret selling them though.
Also my experience, looks great not fun to shoot even when it works

Nicely done! Could look at those all day! ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ
I regret selling my 686. I have a Model 19 that sits around looking pretty though.
I didn’t do those , any of the ones I did would have the picture taken by a 35mm or Polaroid instamatic . I just cherry picked those off the internet so people would know what I was talking about. It really was no big gunsmithing feat . Luckily the colt bbl had a larger threaded diameter so after you turned down and re threaded the bbl it was about the same as replacing a S&W bbl

I recall people falling all over themselves to get Colt barrels installed on S&W frames back in the 80’s when I shot Bullseye matches.
2 guys, in particular, stood out for me because these smarmy guys were the gun club types that knew everything and wanted everyone to know it. They both got Colt Python barrels installed on their S&Ws. Pretty sure one had a model 14 Smith and the other a model 19, but I am not sure.
Anyway, the day came when they both were at our match with their new tack driving match winning “custom” revolvers. Neither one placed in the top 3 and it was obvious to me both their guns shot better before all the work was done to them.
Neither one liked me telling them so, either.
I learned that facts should never get in the way of desire when it comes to custom guns that day and the money that can be wasted on them. The Emperor’s New Clothes cones to mind.
Back when it was popular I worked for a company that was a Colt warranty station so we always had access to barrels . It was pretty popular for a while, most people I knew did it more for the looks than anything. Although everyone always claimed the Python bbls were more accurate I never saw any solid evidence of it . If you reamed the chamber throats on the cylinder and cut the forcing cone to 11 degrees just about any revolver will shoot pretty well, providing its in range, especially with lead bullets .
I’ve been told Colt won’t sell parts for the new Python. If that true I don’t think they will ever be popular with competitive target shooters. But maybe that’s not the market Colt is after.-

And that is precisely why the favorite hand gun in my safe is a 6 inch Smith & Wesson 686.
Under barrel lug. Incredible balance. Beautiful lines. And a Smith & Wesson double action trigger pull.
Back in the 80’s-90’s I made quite a few Smythons or Smolt’s for people. Those people weren’t satisfied with the 586/686 . They must have had a need for the vent rib . Or just having something very few people have . One man’s trash is another one’s treasure

I am going to get flamed for this but having used one I have to say the most over rated gun of all time was the M1 Garand.
Sorry Patton, you are wrong.
Today I definitely agree, collectors love it because of its place in history. I can see how it would have been an advantage for a GI over a K98 or a Arisaka in WW2 . My dad was in the army when they were switching from the Garand to the M14 . To this day he says he would take a Garand over a M14 . CMP has had a big hand in the Garands popularity
Military service is another reason for the popularity of the Garand and the AR . M-16 is the longest serving rifle so far .
My dad was a range instructor at Ft Bragg before he got out so he got to shoot the qualifying course quite often. He said the best score he ever shot was with a O3 A3 . And he shoots left handed . Worst scores were with the M14 . He felt the Garand was the best compromise
It seems almost anything the military or police use is highly rated , I guess it’s whatever the majority are familiar with

I think it’s all about personal desires and expectations. Glocks and AR’s are probably both overrated just because of their popularity. I think there’s allot to those guns having no “soul” for many, but for the ones who love them they see them as more of a tool . I agree with Pat about the Python being overrated, just about every competitive revolver shooter shoots a S&W . But the Python is beautiful. That being said I’ve always preferred S&W
A pump or semi shotgun is probably the most versatile in a shotgun but a well built SxS or O&U can make for a very satisfying ownership experience-

I did not follow this back to YouTube, but I was tempted.
I was curious as to how many people in the comments were raising hell about those people. The Billy Ray Cyrus wannabe on the end, drinking a beer. While handling guns!!!???? OH MY GAWD!!!!!
Then the guy next to him with that sturmgewagh casually pointed at his brother all through the video.
It did not upset me, because I assumed the gun to be empty, and even if it wasn't I wasn't going to get shot. But YouTube commenters - I figure they all lost their minds.
The same way with Dad there. If he cleared that Python I missed it.
I wouldn’t doubt it was done on purpose. The more comments you get on YouTube the more the algorithm seems to promote it . I’ve been watching their videos for a while now and they are usually pretty good. The old man seems to be quite knowledgeable.
It always cracks me up when people complain about guntubers pointing guns at the camera . When most of them probably don’t have or can afford a camera man .-
