What I want to know is why, about ten years ago, everyone started referring to people they know as Mister/Miss first name.

Stumpy, it goes way back further than that.  My parents' very best friends were called Aunt/Uncle + first name.  People who were too close to call Mr/Mrs+last name were Mr/Miss+first name.  I've been Miss Bobbie for decades (unless you're from SC, where I'm Mrs Pete).

  2. What a blessing!  Sounds like Grandson #2 - I don't care what instrument is lying around; he's gonna make music with it.  He's trained in cello and alto sax & took piano lessons as a little kid and totally hated it but, just a few years later was picking out tunes on the Steinway at the airport and drawing a crowd.  Give the kid a comb and some tissue paper.  And whatever else he asks for.

  3. BabyGirl used to run audio for WWE.  Yeah, it's scripted and coreographed.  Nonetheless, she said she had gained new respect for these guys' athleticism and skill.  She said the danger of getting hurt badly was real if you/somebody else messed up.

The women?  Not so much.  They objected when she (the only woman on the crew) used their bathroom.

I was visualizing the kid, squalling, as he went sliding down the frozen surface wearing nothing but a diaper.

Me, too.  It was bad enough when they did it with cats.

  5. Y'all please do not defend slavery.  Chattel slavery is an abomination, from the beginning to time to the present.  However, as a history lover, I refuse to condemn people for doing what was done in the times they lived in.  And we have been paying reparations (in the form of welfare & similar programs) for what? 50 years now?

Just don't go callin' me no Yankee.

Ex-boss & I went to Northern Ireland.  We're in Belfast, spy the Crown Vic (public house on the historic register) across the street from the opera house, and stop in for a glass.  Barman: Yanks, are ye?  Me: well, she is but I, sir, am from the sovereign state of South Carolina.  I thought he'd be lepping over the bar.  Him: and so it's a rebel ye are!  And, all of a sudden, we were the evening's entertainment.

  7. I totally support the basic aims of DEI.  Everybody who has the skills deserves the chance.  In my day it was affirmative action.  Yeah, it was an issue.  I always promised my staff I would hire the best qualified applicant who I thought would best serve the team we had created.  I had a boss who constantly urged me to hire more minorities, even though I consistently had the most diverse unit in our branch office.  My department (set at a distance because of the noise of 21 typewriters) also held the crying chair - by my desk, for employees to discourse with me, though became a place for other supervisors to come and vent, or just seek a few minutes of peace.  One visitor, who had literally worked her way up from the mailroom, was a support supervisor also under my boss.  He was also pushing her to hire minorities (she was one).  She says to me: first time in my life I feel like I got my job because I'm black.  NOBODY should be made to feel that way.  Rant over.

My personal favorite if I have to drink bourbon.  And you are soooooo right about the 'e'.
