  1. While this topic has popped up.  I did as Roger suggested and got the 45 firing pin installed.  Works great.

On the Pedersoli FB page someone complained of the same thing, (357 firing pin broke), so I put up Roger's answer and that I had mine done.

One of the comments was from Pedersoli folks themselves that gave it the thumbs up as best solution.

Again Roger, thank you, thank you!!!

PS I now mostly use the rifle for attempting to shoot little steel chickens, rams, turkeys and pigs.  I was using 357 mag with TB and 125g bullets but one of the guys that is a lot better than I am suggested using a heavier bullet so going to go back to trying the Hunters supply 162g bullets.

The firing pins on the .357 models are .060" diameter and are prone to breakage. Rather than replacing it, I'd suggest you install a .45LC firing pin which is .095" dia. The larger diameter of the firing pin end requires drilling the bolt. The larger firing pin runs as well and will not break. I can do it for you if you are concerned about drilling the bolt.

Thanks I contacted Pedersoli and they say that VTI should have pins in stock.  I have a gunsmith locally here that should be able to do that but again thank you.

  3. It is a great amount of information.  I finally with push stick got 10 rounds of 357 length rounds in the 20 " Pedersoli.  Worked fine not a hiccup.

Worked with 38 spl with Hunter Supply 162g.  I think even better as the nose is quite a bit smaller than the chamber.

Regular 38sp rifle locks up.  Did not expect different.

Hopefully the spring will relax so getting rounds 9 and 10 does not require such a struggle.

Oh I replaced the follower with the Armorers Edge delrin one.

  4. The answer to why is pretty simple. The movie had 1911 .45's, 1897 12 gauges, and 1892 .44-40's & .38-40's. There warn't no .38/357's, .32-20's or .25-20's in the movie. :P

Sorry those where star 9mms not 45s. There was also a luger pistol in there.

  5. 6 stage 10/10/4 is nothing compared to the amount of ammo that I put through on a 3 gun match. If it was not for the reloading machine I could not afford to go.

Depending on the machine, it can be daunting but in the end will pay for itself many times over. I probably have more tied up in die sets then the machine itself which is another expense. Still considering once the big expense is out of the way things pay for themselves quickly.

  6. Seems to be a whole lot of Henry hate'n going on here. As new shooter (one match) I hope to get good enough to where my Henry Big Boy is what is slowing me down, but for right now I need to improve 'my" skills before considering a new and expensive slicked up 73.

All of that being said I did send my BB back to Henry and they smoothed the entrance to the chamber, and I followed my older brother's advice and worked the lever while watching TV. These actions plus using ammo that it likes (Oregon trail laser-cast 140g FP) gives me good performance. In my first match my Henry only wasted maybe 5~6 seconds on just one stage with a failure to eject a spent brass. Another fellow with a Henry did not have any trouble. He was about the same time as I was. Not every 73 was perfect at that match. For now the $500 I saved on a Henry vs a 73 from Taylors I was able to get a gun belt, holsters and shotgun shell belt just the way I want them. This winter I will practice putting snap caps from my belt into my shotgun, dry firing at targets, becoming more familiar with the shooting sequences.

When "I" get a lot faster then I may think about another rifle if I am faster than what I have now.

    Regards

    Chestnut Louie

Put in the one piece Marlin ejector (drops right in). I found it helps, also a lever wrap so you do not short stroke it which is a prime reason for the big boy to catch brass

  7. There was an article in the Garand Collectors Association magazine 2 issues ago about someone who shoots 3 gun with an M-1 instead of an M-16 derivative. Got a few odd looks, but everyone thought it was super cool. I even wrote in to the magazine and suggested paring the M1 with a 1911 instead of a Wonder9 and using a M97 Winchester instead of a modern shotgun with an extended magazine to complete the "theme." They printed my response, along with a few other along the same lines.

Now, I know of no W3G clubs here in New England. But if there was one, I would like to try it.

But you know, nothing in the "regular" 3-gun rules would prevent me from showing up with my S&W New Model 3, Uberti made 66 and my 97 and going to town. Sure, I'd have to reload a lot, but I betcha everyone would think it was awesome....

And that is exactly whatb I have done. Also did WW2 once with 1911, Thompson sub, 97 shotgun.

  8. Here we go again. Couple lustrum ago, some folks started a real fun unofficial side match thing called .... "Wild Bunch." Then someone at SASS decided it would be nice to have "rules." Shortly thereafter, Wild Bunch went directly into the toilette.

So here we have it. Steampunk. Any style "Except" GUNFIGHTER. I ain't saying yer stupid. Just you might be having some trouble with thought. If it's unofficial, intended to be fun (it is), and a free for all, leave it alone. It's not "your" game. It's for anyone who wants to play. Enough with "rules" and "guidelines" already.

    Coffinmaker

Amen on Wild Bunch, it was a lot more fun back then.

  9. We have a l8cal regular three gun and every nowvand then a couple of us use our cowboy guns (hey 1800s tactical). A lot of fun but a 40 round pistol and rifle stage is a challenge to reload on. Match director loves it and if 4 of us run then he will call it separate timed category along with prize. Thee gun is fun, doing it the marlin and schofields really lets you relive some of the old westerns.

  10. Here are the choices I have:

Henry Big Boy steel 357 mag

    Marlin Cowboy comp 38 special

    Awa Lightning 38 special

I have the first and third rifles but have a chance at the Marlin. Love the little lightning but it is sometimes problematic.

  11. I use Hammer double which is Magtech modified to take a 209. I use them occasionally. Lee load all and RCBS die. A bit more work I suppose.

They don't shuck quite as easy as plastic.

    As above I use smokeless
