I have been refilling them for years and years .

Its Legal to refilling them and use them where ever you are .

But it is illegal  to transport them !

    Just Sayin.

I've been rotating about 13 of them. Occasionally one will leak, but screwing it back in and off seals it. The purge pin leaks most often, but a quick snap with needle nose pliers fixes that as well. I like 90° bend pliers. So far with 4-5 refills each, I've never found an empty in my filled box. When these finally go bad, I may watch for a sale on the "refillable" ones. But empty green ones are easy to come by.

Wasn’t talking to or about you. Previous poster (ND) claimed that anyone who had unboxed a reloading press could never claim to not have had a squib.
I disagree and it would appear that you did as well

My apologies!! All in good banter! :)

    I don't get it.

I hear about stuff all this time but I've never experienced it.

Lived in the South almost all my life. I have eaten at the Waffle House in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. All times of the day. I have never seen a fight. I have never seen anyone obviously drunk.

Possibly otto is drunk. I listed seven States, and the only one he capitalized was Tennessee. I had to go back and fix the others. He capitalized house but did not capitalize waffle, he capitalized the word "states". And he capitalized North and South. Even if I didn't, he did.

I worked at one for a very short while. Definitely saw drunks, but no fights. I worked the third shift and it wasn't far from the bars. Supposedly the bars had to close for at least 1 hours per day. So the patrons would stop in during the break for munchies!!

Well the term “never” is an absolute, and generally using absolutes is overstating something. I am a

30 years and zero squibs. What you call it? Never seems to fit or maybe zero. The result to date. I've never died either, it that an overstatement?

    Rant off

Wondering how many cowboys, that use Dillon presses, have had a squib load?

I've been using an SDB for a bit over 30 years. Knock on wood, I've never had a squib. A couple FTFs which went off ok when back home.

You turn the 20lb tank upside down on the dot collar. Forces lp out

Correct. I cut a 4" hole in a board and put it across a couple blocks so I can get my hand under it to turn the valve. You can hear the gas going in so you can sorta tell when to shut it off. Remove and  weigh it.  Then hold pointing away from and with needle nose pliers lift the shrader pin and bleed off a little pressure and hook back up. I usually limit it to 14-15 ounces in a postal scale. I've been rotating 13 bottles for a few years now! Costs me less than a dollar a bottle. My dealer now charges $17.50 to fill a grill tank. When I've weighed them they are right at 20#. Blue Rhino will only give 15#, 3/4 of a tank for twice the money around here!

OH AND AS MUCH AS THIS SEEMS OBVIOUS; DO THE REFILLING OUTDOORS AWAY FROM ANY IGNITION SOURCE

You can ask your 500 gallon propane guy for a wet leg on your tank to refill smaller bottles.

Or buy something like this that uses a 20lb tank

With this done like the picture, you will only get the vapor which won't last long at all. You need to get a pound of liquid in there to get a FULL bottle. Some decent info on a Google search. A simple adapter for about 8 bucks works great. No need for the gauge as it is measuring pressure not liquid quantity/weight. DO NOT put in any more than a pound of liquid as it will expand when the bottle is in a warm environment.

  8. I've been refilling them for years for my hunting blind! Some as many as 5 times now! Sometimes you need to snap the shrader valve to get them to seal. In my experience it's best to have the gas grill tank warmer than the bottle. It usually takes at least 3 times to fill it as you need to keep bleeding off some of the pressure to get them full. I use a scale to be sure to only put a pound in. The source tank has to be upside down to get liquid LP into the small bottle. Gas only won't last long;). I don't see how you'd get liquid propane off a 500 gallon tank as there no access to the bottom of the tank and very much doubt your gas supplier will give you a wet tap as it isn't technically legal to refill the one pound tanks .

Also, wear gloves as liquid propane will burn your hands when you disconnect it and beel off some of the gaseous pressure to get them full.
