  1. I’ve often wondered why people spend so much money on very expensive, decorated things for the sole purpose of being put in the ground, never to be seen again. If it’s important to put the departed on display in one’s home, a nice urn makes sense. If not, an old ammo can will do.

Cardboard box from the hospital was sufficient here in NH and in Maine.

With a jaundiced eye I look back on the whole affair and would not be surprised if the coffin requirement wasn’t a fact. The coffin was far too nice to have been required for kindling and was probably reused for another corpse. We never saw it again, so how would we know?

Since we didn’t buy an urn (another extra charge), the ashes we received were in cylinder wrapped in brown paper and was the size of  a 2 pound coffee can. Coulda been an old Folgers can for all we knew. But I’m pretty sure its volume was too small for human remains and a casket.

  3. My then father in law died in NYC in 1979. He was cremated, but the funeral home embalmed him anyway because they said “many families wanted to view the body at the last minute, and this was precautionary”. 🤨

We were also required to buy a nice wooden casket because state law said a casket must be purchased. I asked the purpose of it, and the funeral guy said, “the coffin is additional fuel for better combustion”.  We were 25 years old and didn’t know any better.

There’s more to the tale, but I’ll stop here. It’s a predatory industry. Shame on all of them.

  4. I remember back in 1974 when Nixon tried mandating DST in February to “save energy.” Turned out people were turning the lights on earlier, negating any benefit. As I recall, the real killer for the policy was school children were either walking to school or being transported in the dark. Duh.

  5. .38-40 is niche caliber with little demand. I could be wrong, but I’m not aware of anyone making .38-40 revolvers, and .44-40 revolvers don’t have same demand as .45.

Many CAS shooters don’t want to load 2 different calibers which is why .45 is more popular than .44-40.

It’s expensive to tool up for cartridges and guns that have little demand in the marketplace.

Adding on, CAS is a very small drop in the bucket of shooting sports. Manufacturers have to go where the money is.

  6. If you’re really bored, look up the history of this nonsense on Wikipedia, where you’ll be regaled with multiple contradictory studies on the benefits and detriments of it.

IMO, it’s a wash at best, and mostly disruptive to people’s lives twice a year. Don’t know why we do it.

I wear mine backwards when casting, so it protects the top of my head and the back of my neck in case the tin foil fairy comes to visit. The front of me head is covered by a full face visor.

Until I realized that’s a face shield, I thought you were talking about fishing on a sunny day. 😁

  8. A ball cap worn backwards looks cool when:

    Aiming a rifle

    Driving a boat

Flying an open cockpit airplane or open canopy

A ball cap worn backwards looks stupid when:

    At the ballpark

    At the beach

Taking the dog for a walk

You get my drift. Please add your own. 😉

  9. Calories are but a portion of the nutritional picture. By themselves, they’re meaningless. Where those calories come from is extremely important. And much of it is a shell game anyway, designed to entertain the public. If you focus on the minutia, you never have deal to with the real problem with your diet.

Forty Rod hit the nail on the head.

  10. I have several ball caps that have been worn a lot thru the years. Like anything else, they’ve become dirty, especially the bill, such as the “scrambled eggs” embroidery glued to my VQ-1 squadron cap.

What’s the best way to clean them, as I’m concerned about damaging the cardboard stiffener in the bill? I’ve seen cages you can clamp them in for tossing in the laundry, or would dry cleaning be better?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Been seeing lots of videos on YouTube lately whose title uses something along the lines of; one crazy trick, One illegal action, one forbidden hack, one crazy method, and so on.  Then the videos spend 30 minutes to an hour getting to the point.

While the videos are mostly factual they do contain flaws and have all the hallmarks of being the product of an AI bot. All are posted from a handful of channels.

I'm really beginning to hate AI.

I’m also noticing there are more and more with “shocking” in the title and arrows on the image. Many times the image is totally bogus. I avoid all of these like the plague.

Unfortunately, content on YouTube is becoming more like clickbait.

    You don't understand it?

If you are a Ford guy, and I am looking at the new Chevy trucks, you are probably going to tell me that it's a piece of garbage.

You don't know anything about the new Chevy truck, except that it is a Chevy and therefore not a Ford so it must be garbage.

This is the way people are. This is the way people have always been.

You ride a sorrel??? What kind of idiot rides a sorrel? Smart people ride line-back duns.

You use a rapier??? You need to get a bastard sword, like I have.

You still use a longbow?? I can't believe anybody, in this day and age, still uses a longbow. Get with the program, man! Get a crossbow. Longbows are junk!!

    Reminds me of this scene.

  14. I have to admit that the only reason I consider upgrading my iPhone is for the improvements in the camera. The iPhone 13 I have takes better, higher resolution images than the Nikon SLR I bought several years back. And the video quality is better than the brick I used to carry for such things. I can carry it in my pocket instead of slung around my neck. I take a lot of photos, so the convenience is attractive to me.

  15. The conundrum for me is there are people making gobs of money off the efforts of the players. Once that happens, I don’t have a problem with them receiving some kind of compensation if they can get it. That the money grubbing has trickled down to high school sports is an indictment of our society’s misplaced priorities. It wouldn’t surprise me if the sports betting industry has a category for high school games. Money corrupts everything.

As for college, the main objection I have to NIL is the transfer portal. My thinking is it should be more like pro sports where the player signs a contract for 4 years to play for a particular school. One of the reasons I don’t follow Division I sports is the players don’t stick around long enough to watch them or a team develop. Imagine watching your favorite TV show, but the cast changes every season.
