So how many of these old-timers were using short-stroke kits and firing mouse fart loads?

Nada, zip, zero on the short-stroke.  But... they weren't far in the future.  Define "mouse fart" load.  At this time there was a fps floor, IIRC 650fps.    That was changed to 400fps and then we got the "power factor".

We here in North Texas are blessed() with getting to shoot with Griff SASS # 93 (IIRC) {fixed that, you didn't}  He started in California back in the day and talks about Smucky and others all the time.

I try not to...   and you'd only be blessed if you got to shoot with my wife...  Actually, I appreciate y'all puttin up with my infrequent visits.  '88 was the last year that BP required C&B revolvers... and I learned that one shouldn't first shoot a big match with a "new" gun!  I thought a new 1858 Remington would be an improvement over my 1851... it wasn't!

  3. If I understood T-Bone correctly, Plainsman side match will be held in the am, and Wild Bunch side match in the afternoon on the same stages.  If you were letting that hang you up from entering one or t'other, you can now enter BOTH!  Chickens... beware!

I haven't been shooting in quite some time. I developed a palsy in my hands and can't hold a revolver steady any longer. It's apparently genetic. So I've taken to cycling. Mostly Mountain Bike these days.

    Hope everyone is well.

    You're missed.  Stay well.

  5. Gotta agree with Lone Dog... When asking why former shooters don't shoot anymore... I get two answers... the 60 PF and it's nothing but six-gun and rifle speed. Along with "got tired of same ol', same ol' stages"... "other things came along that're more fun". It's also often a combination of those, with "grandkids man... grandkids!" thrown in!

I only have one issue... short strokes. Either rifle or pistol. Between them, they've taken the game places never imagined by it's founders... (Oh, and if you make any of your income off any of these, your opinion is tainted, so don't bother to respond). Arguing about this is pointless... 'cause I won't, you can't fight human nature, and it's the nature of man to go faster, with more ease and beyond.

But, really, the main reason is economics... It used to cost a shooter about $1500 to buy all three guns... (often less)... and with a little judicious smoothing you could be competitive. NOW, one has to spend nearly the cost of your guns in modifications in order to be competitive.

  6. The rule books don't cover every possible scenario that might occur on a stage.

The RO2 reference covers options in case of an actual failure of a target or prop...not necessarily one that is "shooter-assisted".

In event of a situation that is not listed, the most fair and reasonable application is utilized.

The shooter should not benefit from his own error (shooting the wrong KD) by being allowed to quickly dump all ten rifle shots on a single target...

    IMO.

Oh look, almost the entire ROIII manual in four simple sentences...

  7. Well I can only find "shoot where it was" and "engage an alternate target" in one place in the rule book and they are literally in the same sentence. I would assume that they are either both an option or neither an option.

I'll fall back on experience... I can still hear Hipshot whispering in my ear (sounded like that even tho' I'm sure he was yellin'), "shoot where it was"... when several plates fell on the rack during a match some 29 years ago... :D

  8. I see it as a straight Boolean logic sequence... if shooter causes a target to not be available, then shooter doesn't get the full consideration of the "target failure" alternatives...

I.e.: in a plate rack scenario... just the opposite of the OP, 5 plates for five shots, then a dump plate for 5 shots... if one of my first five shots causes multiple plates to fall, I would continue to shoot where they "were"... and then with the 2nd pistol shoot the dump for 5 shots. I wouldn't expect to shoot the dump plate for any of the 1st pistol shots.

To be a contrarian, let's take a 3 target Nevada sweep for 10 shots... on the 1st pass, target 2 falls to the ground. THAT's a target failure... I then have the option to "shoot where it was", or shoot an alternate target... In the case of the plate rack, the target operated as intentioned... fell when hit with a bullet... not a "target failure".

  9. I'd agree with you Yusta... and so publically state... but that might lead to swelled heads among my friends. Then again, they might already possess such, and it wouldn't matter, or they think so little of my opinion, that it wouldn't matter... Yep, that's probably it!:o:P

  10. Griff - that's a square load! Sure one can charge a lower amount of powder.

Do they go Boom or do they just go Pufff! :D

Danged if I know... I'm too busy watching the targets fall down... and trying to see the next one thru the smoke! :P:D:D

  11. I'm gonna call a second miss on this one. The rifle kd wasn't there because the shooter knocked it down when he shot the wrong target. Therefore the "missing" target was caused by the shooters own actions. There was no target failure. And yes, self inflicted wounds are the most painful.

Bet ya can't show us that in the rules...

Exactly right Smokestack. But, I wouldn't call it a target or prop failure. Just as when shooting a plate rack, if one falls (inexplicitly or not), shoot where it was... a free shot. BOD to the shooter!
  12. Cat, the Lee Load-All will do a fine job loading 20ga BP rounds ... IF, there is a shot bushing to dump 61.75gr or 68.5gr of BP for the 7/8 and 1 oz shot reloads Otherwise, a powder bushing sleeve will have to be made. Or the option will have to be a Lee adjustable shot dipper and the powder dumped manually not using the slide.

Lee Load-All's with the supplied powder bushings are designed to reload smokeless rounds, not black powder

FOR A TWENTY GUAGE?!!!!!!! I don't use that much by nearly a third in my 12 gauge BP shotshells.

  13. Just how big does a single stage press need to be?

Can you list how many other single stage presses this compact are made from iron and not alum? ;)

This would work well for loading 'on the road'.

    OLG

+1. They have an exceedingly good rep in the shotshell loading community, and that goodwill will likely spill over to this new press... Yes, they have some stiff competition, but with most presses being aluminum these days, this will definitely cut the mustard!

  14. Since you cast your own, look at the RCBS 45-225-CAV

I found it cycles like butter in my Rossi.

And in 1860s, 1866s, 1873s, 1885s, 1892s, and 1894s! With SPG lube & BP, it still works a wonder... 10-12 stages with no crusting of the foulng... Seated correctly, it's also a great performer in the 1911! I don't just LIKE this bullet... I LOVE IT!

  15. Amen, to the above advice to let a cowboy gunsmith do this work. (Tho' for the life of me, I can't think why... as both my Stoegers open with more than enough clearance to allow shells to drop out and stay that way for reloading. Neither of which has been modified in this fashion).

  16.

Mr. Ranger: 38 Special / What are you referring to in this statement?

Tanning solutions will corrode brass cases, first signs are a green verdigris. The inside of cartridge loops are generally rough-out, and very hard to seal. Even nickel cases will eventually corrode.

  17. After 40 years I had the slot holding the chain on my 600Jr. break-off. Ordered the new primer feed assy. from MEC. I don't like handling primers by hand. The #2 (or maybe #1), Shot Shell Reloading Tip should be... "buy a Shot Shell Reloading Manual and stick to the formulas provided EXACTLY!"

  18. THAT's my point. They have designed the game so that you must modify your guns to be able to do it. You should be able to play the game without penalty with unmodified equipment . It has been set up so that the opposite is true. Setting it up so that it requires a modification to avoid a penalty is not right.

Actually, last night I was reading something interesting in the 1950 Winchester catalog... On the hunt for something else, but ran across this:

    97%20catalog%20page.jpg

Please note what it sez about magazine capacity. Page 54 has no capacity info on the riot gun version of either the mdl 12 or 1897.

  19. Well Griff, as I've said many times, it is the cylinder that contains the pressure of the cartridge firing. The frame, which includes the top strap, does not see the pressure of the cartridge firing. However the frame does see the pounding of recoil, and a thicker top strap will be important in keeping the frame from stretching or otherwise failing from the heavier recoil of the 44 Mag cartridge.

    Aye, we're in agreement.
