  1. AA5744, IMR3031, but... in fact, your intended use may include a bunch of others. For cast loads, get a Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, Ed. #4, it'll give you what they found as the most accurate load (in their test platform, YMMV), and many choices.

  2. So Boggus, what you're saying is that we can leave a pistol anywhere if not in the holster, as long as it's deemed safe?

Not Boggus, but no, unless the stage directions allow you to, otherwise it must be holstered. And if there is another gun between the pistols, the pistol string consists of FIVE shots.

  3. Many of the guns used for SASS are tuned for competition. Dual purpose generally means it is not good for either purpose. Sort of like "universal fit" means it does not fit anything.

I will respectfully disagree. The function of the gun is to load and fire a cartridge at a target. Be that target live game or steel. If it functions properly, it will do that just fine. Now, if you're running a gun that's on the ragged edge of safe operation, you probably ought not be using it in SASS or the hunting field. Removal of trigger block safeties and other features is plain foolhardy in the field, and at the SASS match.

  4. Frankly, buy 200 rounds, (or whatever it'll take to complete your local monthly match), of good quality American made ammo in brass cases and go to a match! I know one feller that diddled and dawdled around for many months, saying he needed this or that... And a week before his first match... he died of a coronary. I think of this guy every time I read of someone saying I need to get this or that before I come out to a match. A waste of (insert your favored Naval expletive here) TIME!

  5. I had a top gun guy tune my SAA in 1986. He hourglassed the factory mainspring in my Colt... it broke about a year later. I then bought a factory replacement spring from Colt, and hourglassed it myself. Kept it about 1/4" wide and polished the entire circumference of the spring. It's still in the gun. The 2nd Colt got the same treatment on it's factory spring about 1994. It's still in the gun. The trick is to NOT let the spring turn red as you grind away any unwanted spring. It ain't a 5 minute job.

  6. Folks often get their facts mixed up. Confusing SAA production with Colt's 2nd Series Percussion guns. Colt did in fact, contract with Uberti to provide forgings for their 2nd Series percussion "re-issue" guns. The parts were then fitted and finished at the Colt factory. A second set of Uberti forgings were then turned over to Iver Johnson for fit and finish; these came to be the "Signature Series". Unlike the earlier 2nd Series percussion guns, these did not carry any Colt warranty. They were shipped in Colt boxes and carry the Colt address and name under license from Colt. Colt has made and continue to make the forgings for their SAAs and several other guns. They do outsource some processes, like CCH, but done to their standards and processes.

The story goes that Colt sold their old machinery to Pietta, who now produces clones on those machines. So, you if want a worn-out Colt, buy a new Pietta! Piettas are known as the closest to Colt in size and interchangeability... but don't count of EVERYTHING being interchangeable. Hellfire and tarnation, I have a Colt bolt in an old Jager built clone. It didn't fit... but with file and Manuel Labor, I made it work!

  7. You are starting your 6th year with number 97501 and we are just getting into numbers in the 104000's. So, SASS has grown by 6500 shooters in 6 years +/-.

Wow, there is obviously some serious issues when it comes to marketing. Back in the early 2000's we were growing by 10-12k per year.

Just what happened? I guarantee the NRA numbers have continued to grow, along with guns sales in general. I don't believe that age has much to do with growth. The guys I know work their butt's off putting on matches. I think many of us do our part to support SASS. Just what is SASS doing to advertise on a national level? Has anyone seen an advertisement in a magazine or television? Henry runs an ad during prime time on Fox News. Where are our non-profit dollars going? I see that Misty and others are hosting a booth at the Eastern Sportsman's Show, hopefully we will see numbers of folks that visit the booth and sign up, along with an uptick in participation in that area.

The NRA experiences the same problem with renewals. Folks join, then simply don't renew, for a vast variety of reasons. And, in some cases, the very same reasons as folks don't renew with SASS... with the glaring exception that SASS doesn't hound you to donate to their political action causes.

  8. I haven't paid dues in years, am not disgraceful, in fact paid twice the life membership price for my "Endowment: life membership! And agree with Allie Mo, interested new persons need a avenue to make inquiries. Even one that probably overwhelms them with extraneous and sometimes conflicting info!

THE benefit of membership is protection of your alias. Which is part and parcel of what clubs agree to when becoming affiliated and hold SASS sanctioned matches. I like the fact that I can travel from WA to FL, CA to ME and know I can shoot under my alias.

The Chronicle is icing on the cake. It started out a quarterly; I tended to read it less as a monthly, quarterly is 'bout often enough.

  9. Buck, I understand completely, there'd only be ONE stage with that high a rifle count, the other 3 will be less. It'll be at a solo target, but a dangerous one, so be prepared to make your shots count!

As for total round count, if you bring 25 rifle, 20 shotgun & fixin's for 45 pistol shots you'll have at least a few of each left over!

  10. Ok, now some of y'all are off shooting matches today... time to ruffle yer feathers! Some of y'all sent in yer applications before this was discussed, so as of a coupla days ago we only have FOUR (4, Quattro, one less than five), and fer you Marines, hold up the fingers of one hand... NO! put your thumb back down... shooters signed up for Plainsman.

Y'all please put it on your app when you send it in. If you have already entries please email Sheryl to over to yahoo.com. thanks

That'd be to sheryltolbert at yahoo dot com.

No more slackin' off and lolly-gaggin' about, git-er-done, or we ain't gonna have no Plainsman match agin this year! The four of you that already did this, yer one sort of special... but you others, what're saying you're gonna shoot Plainsman, BUT ain't notified the Bar-3 of same, yer some other sort of "special". You gotta let the folks KNOW, by special email that you wanna be included.

Now, for that third set of special folks, them what can't remember if you put in on your application... EMAIL Sheryl ANYWAY!!! (Or you could look at the confirmation that Sheryl sent you). Even if you're already down... we ain't gonna MAKE you shoot the side match TWICE!

Traditional or Modern... it's real easy, if your rifle has ejectors, your "modern"... otherwise you're traditional. But we have to get the numbers to hold it!

  11. I love my Kelley sights. I own mva sights also. The difference is buffalo arms will mail your kelley sights immediately. Mva will tell you they are waiting on some stock to arrive, and tell you you'll have to wait a month. 6 weeks later you'll call, and they'll say two more weeks! 3 weeks after that, you still won't have them! Both equal quality, but the Kelley sights will actually get to your house. They look better too! Lunger.

Man, I just dropped in and picked mine up... maybe I was lucky...
