  1. Ah likes my Coffee strong and Black but Not Bitter .....

Come ta think on it Ah don't much care for Bitter People either ....

But a Bearsign or two would set right fine bout now ...

Mud ole boy , my local range 7 1/2 miles from my door doesn't have a real Long-range side match ,,, and Alberta Frontier Shooters lost the range they had last you was up here with the sweet long range set-up ... They have since moved to a new range near Rocky Mountain House ,,,, but with-out a real long-range set-up ...

Palmers Gulch at Heffley Creek has the best long range set-up up this way ...

  3. The 1.66 inches of drop is the extra drop you would have, caused by the change in elevation if you kept the same sight setting for 300 yards on my range then went to a range 2,000 feet lower elevation...

All numbers are for Additional Drop or Drift and not the final number but must be added to the amount of Drop and Drift already accounted for at my range....

The problem is also what would the velocity difference be ? All of the numbers are based on the velocity staying at 1.450 fps. ,,,, But this is an unknown and I can't haul my Chronograph equipment with me...

So the only true way available to a Cowboy is test firing ....

As an aside even Published BC values are not always accurate , for instance When the Hornady SST hunting bullet first came out in .270 cal . their stated BC was out by 20% as I found out by actual test firing I talked to their ballistic guy and he stated that yes the model they used to predict the BC had given the wrong BC and they had just finished test firing this bullet and that their data reflected the greater BC the same as my data ... They changed the BC in their data to reflect the 20% higher BC ...

  4. Well I ran my ballistic program some using my range conditions, then I simply changed ONLY the elevation to that of what I Now Understand is the case at Winter Range ... My program includes a feature that high-lights the differences, so here goes.,,, Numbers all show the difference as Greater at WR than at my range ,,, ie; the bullet drop Zeroed at 300 yards at my range the bullet would be 1.66 inches low at WR wind drift an extra 7.47 inches, Bullet slower by 20 fps.

At 400 yards 3.96 inches extra drop,Wind drift extra 12.42 inches, Bullet slower by 20.5 fps.

At 500 Yards 7.69 extra drop,, wind drift extra 18.172 inches, bullet slower by 20.7 Fps.

At 1,000 Yards 59.09 inches extra drop, wind drift extra 90.5 inches, bullet slower by 23.7 Fps.

All this is for a high BC . 4065 dia. bullet weighing 410 grains started out at 1,450 Fps.

Every .45-70 load in have Chronographed would fair worse that the above load and also every .38-55 load even more so ...

To get as high a BC in .45 caliber requires a bullet of around 570 grains , and I have never seen a .45-70 come close to 1,450 Fps. with a bullet of this weight in use in this game .... Most clock under the speed of sound ...

Ballistic testing and Gunsmithing are how I afford to pay to play this Game ...

    Hope this helps ....

  5. Howdy Mud Marine ;

Missed Ya this year saw you was signed up ,,,,, then heard ya wasn`t coming so I had to make smoke for us both ...

Since ole Tickelwood passed I have been left ta rightfully cloud up the range ... Be nice ta have someone else folks could blame da clouds on ...

  6. A rifle sighted in at 3,884 ft. of elevation will shoot MUCH differently at WR , not to mention one that has been bouncing on down the road in a camper for 1,800 miles...

Plus differing levels of Humidity ,,,,,,,,, etc .... Did ya all Know The BC of the bullet changes due to the elevation .... What`s the change in velocity .....

There are just TOO many variables not to make practice targets available if you want all to have a fair chance ....

  8. I have tested a number of ".45 colts " loads left to me by a Grandad all are from factory loads loaded between the years of 1873 and 1919 , all contain bullets weighing between 255.7 gr. and 259.7 grains , all of these loads Chronograph over 1,000 fps. in his First Gen SAA with a 7 1/2 inch barrel ....

All are Blackpowder loads and not one of the cartridges disassembled contained less than 38.7 grains of powder by weight , the granulation appears to be a close match of Goex 3F powder of 2014 Vintage and in appearance most of it appears to be a perfect match with some "Curtis & Harvey" 3f of 1978 Vintage...

SD in the single didgets is the norm ....

  9. Pigpen;

Pard I understand some of the problems with running Long-range at WR,,, the long-range at my first WR (2016) was the biggest disappointment of my 3,600 mile round trip .... All the hype and the Big deal made about WB was a very close second...

I am happy to see you are giving some more thought to improving the long-range at WR, my likely to be once in my lifetime trip has left me a bit soured on WR as it made no sense to me to even take my Highwall out of it's case ....

The only Longrage event I even tried was the "Pistol Caliber Lever action" event where I placed 6th. behind 5 shooters using smokeless powder , I was using a 92 in .45 colt loaded with full case loads of 3f Goex under a 270 gr. bullet ... Yes I hit all 10 , but just a little slower than the top five,,, but I did it faster than the next 8 shooters that also hit 10 targets ....

This past summer I helped run the Long-range Events at two major SASS shoots , "The Mallihat" shoot by Victoria B.C. and the "SASS Canadians" ...

For me long-range doesn't even start till we get pasted the 265 yard mark ( the shortest distance that my sights allow a hold on target) with my Highwall in .40-65 ...

Both shoots I helped with had plenty of time for sighting in your guns .....

  10. ME !

Wanted ta do it for years before I bit da bullet and jumped in with both feet... a couple of decades ago... ...

I was a Cowboy before it and the song about being a Cowboy Before it was Cool, came out ....

I used to Work as a Cowboy and Rodeo in my younger days, Worked as a Hunting Guide ran my own outfitting service ...

Guess I don't really understand a non Cowboy life style...

  11. The Stoeger Coach gun has extractors not ejectors and they are legal ....

But the Very Best thing you can do is come on out to a shoot and try a gun or dozen , bring a box of 12 ga. AA target loads with you and I'm sure you won't have a problem finding guns to shoot them up in ...

Talk to folks ,,,,,,, Listen ,,,,,,,,,,,, Try ,,,,,,,,,,,,, Before you BUY ...
