PLUS ONE for the Phantom (both)
NO. I don't think Magtech 12Ga Brass Hulls are overpriced. MagTech pricing is right in line with EVERYTHING at this point in time. If you're not looking to buy, whya whining??

An Opinion. Worth just what you're paying for it. There is still a couple Hundred Thousand '97s in the back of the same number of closets. Yours has didly squat collector value. The Butt Stock is at the wrong angle for our game, intended for shooting "up" mostly at Ducks as a "market gun." Beyond that, Phantom is entirely correct. Three Screw guns break frequently. Based on age, your gun most likely has two and a half inch chambering. Even if mark'd 2 3/4, it isn't. It will need having the chamber re-cut for modern 2 3/4 inch plastics and the forcing cone lengthened. Chopping the barrel WILL make it handier. Adding choke tubes even handier. Bottom line though, it's YOUR Shotgun. Make it work for YOU!! And let us not forget, the appropriate instrument for timing H.K. is either a Sun Dial or an Hour Glass.

No. Not really objective. There are variables. Once the experiment is finished, what has been proved?? The differences are actually academic. The real world difference in "speed" of the various selections is moot. Unmodified rifles for CAS?? Your kidding??

At one time, Cimarron was cataloguing the 1851 Richards/Mason in multiple barrel length. 4 3/4, 5 1//2 and 7 1/2. I don't see that availability now. It may be a "Call and See" kind of thing. For a while was the same for the Open Top. Multiple barrel lengths. It may well be, with the reduction in demand, those options have been discontinued. Still worth a Call.
Once you get an answer from Cimarron or Taylors, DO go thru a dealer. Preferably one you know and trust. You will get a better price than ordering direct from any importer.

RUST
Rust NEVER Sleeps. "Natural" finish for most hand guns is Blue or Nickel. Bare steel is . . . badly cared for. Except for Stainless.
Added:
No, not "extra" cleaning, but a constant light coating of Oil or other Rust Preventative. And even at that, RUST will still sneak up onya.

PLUS ONE for Widder!!
My most recent pair of brandy dam'd new .45s have three and half inch barrels. Yum Yum Yum. Quick out of the holster even if I am too dam'd old to be "quick."

Deacon, I might introduce ya to "Hacksaw MacGurk." MacGurk can solve that "excess" steel on the front of yer shotgun you betcha.

I'd have a pair of Custom Built 1860 Henry Rifles. A 19 inch barrel Transitional Carbine and a 16 inch barrel Trapper set up for C45S, and . . wait!! I have those!! A Pair of Custom Built Pietta .44 Navy (never never) SNUBBIES and a Pair of Pietta Capt. Schaeffer Replicants and . . . wait!! I have those. A Pedersoli Hammer Double 12Ga and . . . Oh, I have that too. I'm Done.

Something to keep in the back of your mind when considering Damascus barrels. A Damascus barrel has had a LONG time to sit in the back of a closet or ever a fireplace forming rust in the laminations. A lesser Damascus barrel could well cost you your left hand (or right, depending). There does not exist in the United States a "Proof House." And try to consider, Firing one of these old guns with a "proof" load only confirms the gun survived and overload ONCE. No promise it won't come apart violently the next time fired. Vorsicht!! Minen!!

I have two suggestions for those of you whom are shooting Lightnings in .45 Colt. Everybody knows 45 Colt cases don't expand enough to seal the chamber and prevent gobs of Blow-By. Suggestion # 1 > Anneal your cases. Nice soft annealed cases will seal up and stop Blow-By. Start with 44-40 cases and fire form them to 45 Colt (very easy). The 44-40 cases will also seal in a 45 Colt chamber and stop the Blow-By. The rifle will run as clean as a 44-40.

PLUS ONE to Pettifogger
Skip all the WAG(s) and fit a new after-market Main Spring. Notice I said "fit." The top of the spring must not touch the back radius of the hammer.

Cheyenne,
Give VTI Gunparts a jingle and order in several (four guns - get six) Pietta Trigger Bolt springs.

If the rounds you fire just go "Piffit" and you have time to run down and move the target, your probably not meeting "power Factor."
